Girls Basketball Season Overview 2009-2010
It is always a difficult thing to graduate a handful of players and wonder how the next year is going be. This year's girls basketball team boasted a strong mix of 8th graders with a few underclassmen tossed in. We were initially hesitant to put many expectations on the year, but the girls showed that they were ready to compete. With a few first year players, Mr. Taccad and myself discovered that we had to reign in a little bit of the raw talent that we already possessed. The girls tackled the season with perseverance as we had a few expected lows and highs. We had a few dominant wins against schools such as Somonauk, but certainly had our troubles against teams like St. Paul Austin. It was encouraging to see how the girls picked up on some of the smaller things as the season progressed. Layups began to look like real layups. Free throws began to go in a little more frequently, and the game of basketball began to be understood. One of my favorite practices was following a tough loss for our team. The girls were playing a simple five on five game, but the light bulb went on. Their competitiveness came out and they began to play some of the best basketball that we had seen all year. They played a exhausting game to 10 with only a one point difference between the two teams. Spent, lying on the floor, someone said, "Lets play again. We want to win." So, they all got up and played another quick game. I think that I can speak for Mr. Taccad and say that our girls have had a wonderful season. They are certainly a very capable group of players once they decide to focus and play they way they have learned.
